What is your "why"? What drives you to do this important work each day?
I do this work because I grew up in the public school system as a Black youth and experienced racism firsthand. When my students face the same struggles, I know how it feels to be a victim to racist acts. My goal is to make their school experience better than mine, by ensuring they feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed despite the barriers they face.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy watching the students find out what they are made of, seeing the potential in themselves, and seeing Black unity within our space. It is something I wasn’t able to experience when I was a student in school, so it really makes me happy to be a part of their journey.
What would you most like families to know about the role of Student Support Workers in HRCE schools?
I want families to know that as a Student Support Worker, my role is to advocate for, mentor, and support Black students in navigating the school system. I work to create a safe space where they feel seen, heard, and empowered while also addressing barriers they may face. My goal is to ensure their academic success, well-being, and confidence by fostering a school experience where they can thrive.
